Exactly 30 years after the first Toy Story movie was released, establishing Pixar as a leading animation studio and bringing audiences to iconic characters like Woody (the actor) and the space ranger (the voice talent), who are now famous worldwide.

In 2026, the fifth installment is scheduled for release. The initial preview for Toy Story 5 appeared this week, providing a brief look into the plot but leaving fans wondering how it will address the ending of Toy Story 4.

The Latest Addition: A Frog-Shaped Tablet Spooks the Gang

The preview shows the young girl — who inherited Andy's toys when he grew up — receiving a latest toy, one that terrifies Woody, Buzz, and the crew. She gets her first tablet computer, and she is thrilled about it.

Presumably, the amphibian-inspired device will come to life just like the rest of her playthings. Still, the characters seem to view it as a threat intending to supplant them, which it likely will.

Woody's Return: Unanswered Questions from Toy Story 4

One thing the trailer avoids is why Woody is returned with his companions in the child's bedroom. The finale of Toy Story 4 depicted him embark on a new adventure with the shepherdess (Annie Potts), journeying with a fair and helping prize toys locate loving owners.

Surely, the filmmakers will explain the consequences of Toy Story 4 in the movie. Seeing him appear in Bonnie's room without warning is a little strange, though. It also raises questions whether Bo Peep will have returned with him. And where is the stuntman toy (the star)?

Continuity from the Previous Film

At the very least, some aspects are continuing from the earlier movie. The final act the cowboy did before departing for his new life was pass his sheriff badge to the cowgirl (the voice actor), leaving her in charge of Bonnie's bedroom. The clip displays the badge pinned to her shirt.

It is hoped she is still the driving force among the toys.

Toy Story 5 arrives in theaters on the scheduled date.
